Business Community at Multi-Chamber Luncheon

West Valley City, Utah – Rep. Jim Matheson will be speaking to members of five chambers of commerce in Salt Lake County at the Rocky Mountain Raceways Convention Center located at 6555 West 2100 South in West Valley City on Tuesday, September 6^th at 11:45 a.m. Some current issues likely to be discussed by Rep. Matheson include immigration, healthcare, the budget and the country’s economic outlook. Rep. Matheson will also be awarded the ‘Spirit of Enterprise’ award from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

The luncheon is being hosted by ChamberWest and includes members from these participating chambers of commerce; Magna, West Jordan, South Jordan and Southwest Valley including Riverton, Herriman and Bluffdale.

The cost of the luncheon is $20 per person for chamber members. Chamber members and others from the business community are welcome to attend. Congressman Matheson serves on the House Energy & Commerce Committee, an exclusive committee with the broadest jurisdiction of any Congressional committee. The Energy and Commerce Committee deals with energy policy, consumer protection, food and drug safety, health care, air quality and environmental health, telecommunications and interstate and foreign commerce.

Congressman Matheson is a sixth-generation Utahn who was born and reared in Salt Lake City. Jim, his sister and his two brothers all attended Salt Lake City public schools. He received his B.A. in government from Harvard University and his MBA from UCLA. Before his election to Congress, he worked in the energy industry for 13 years for several local companies and in his own firm. His wife, Amy, is a pediatrician and they have two sons.

ChamberWest Expo MarketPlace

As I have visited businesses in the area over the past few months, I am happy to report in general that business is on the increase. Many have seen their best Christmas sales since the recession began. Others see 5-7% increases in sales over prior years. The chamber is seeing more interest in business benefits offered through chamber membership.

To meet this trend, ChamberWest developed ‘Benefits-365™’ which rewards business owners with reduced costs on such things as UPS shipping, discounted dental insurance, discounted email newsletter service, discounted commercial fleet insurance, discounted radio ads, discounted newspaper ads and more. No attendance to chamber meetings are necessary, simply run your business for less by being a member of the chamber.

ChamberWest has also adjusted to accommodate the needs to businesses owners. ChamberWest has partnered with all chambers of commerce on the west-side of Salt Lake County for Business Matters Luncheons. Our last luncheon had 170 business owners in attendance, and prior to the luncheon we held the chamber’s Business Before Lunch networking event.

U.S. Senate votes to remove the 1099 Provision

The Senate has voted to remove an unpopular provision of the healthcare reform law that requires all businesses to fill out a tax form each time they spend $600 or more.

By a bipartisan vote of 81-17, the Senate on Wednesday evening passed an amendment by Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) that would repeal a provision from the ACA that requires all businesses to fill out a tax form known as a "1099" each time they spend $600 or more.

The 1099 provision was intended to give the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) more tools to ensure all taxes that are owed are paid. It was expected to raise an estimated $19 billion to help pay for expanding healthcare coverage to the uninsured as part of the ACA.

But businesses complained that the provision was too onerous, congressional Republicans and Democrats didn't like it, and even President Obama called the provision a "flaw" during his State of the Union address last week and said that he was open to removing it from the law.

ChamberWest signed a letter of support with the U. S. Chamber of Commerce to support the removal of this onerous bookkeeping policy.

A 20-year veteran of the investment management industry, Jim Paulsen is the chief investment strategist at Wells Capital Management. Dr. Paulsen is responsible for developing investment strategies that assist in the management of separate institutional account assets, as well as mutual and collective investment funds.

In 1997, he joined Norwest Investment Management, Inc., which later combined with Wells Capital Management. Previously he was the senior managing director and chief investment strategist for Investors Management Group, Des Moines, Iowa. Barron's added Paulsen to its 12-member panel of elite economists in 2002. Gold Cross Introduces Emergency Medical ID Card

ChamberWest member Gold Cross Ambulance has introduced a virtual medical identification card that allows individuals to share limited access to their vital health information in the event of an emergency.
The Invisible Bracelet (iB) is a wallet card, key fob or ID sticker linked to a secure online web service, where members can register their vital health information. The bracelet allows Gold Cross personnel quick access to a patient's health information, through PIN-enabled online access, saving critical time in getting the patient treated. If medical transport is necessary, medics can notify up to 10 patient contacts immediately via SMS text message or email.

iB is a voluntary service that puts the patient in control of the information medics can access and is as secure as online banking. This HIPAA-compliant web service exceeds federal and state patient privacy and security laws and creates an audit log every time patient data is accessed. The card will help Gold Cross medics perform their job more efficiently by reducing patient harm and unnecessary expenses that results from having incomplete or inaccurate vital emergency health information.  

“Having access to a patient’s health information at the scene saves valuable time in assessing the situation," said Brooke Macias, Gold Cross Ambulance Community Relations. "This gives our medics an advantage in a crisis and we expect the Invisible Bracelet will help us save more lives.”

C.R. England Increases Operational Efficiency with Innovative Solutions

While trucking companies nationwide grapple with high fuel costs, increased regulations and other challenges, leaders at C.R. England, the world’s largest refrigerated carrier, have distinguished themselves with their commitment to sustainability and innovation.

C.R. England is using an enhanced intermodal transportation solution, TempStack container-on-flatcar technology (COFC), which combines the benefits of rail transportation with the convenience of localized trailer delivery. The use of the intermodal network — which uses shipping via rail instead of over-the-road — saved C.R. England and its customers more than 3.5 million gallons of fuel last year. This can also lead to lower consumer product costs.

The company also expects to lower fuel costs by 40 percent compared to traditional operating models by selecting more energy efficient solutions with world-leading control functions. These controls allow drivers to tightly manage temperature while optimizing fuel usage by cycling the cooling process, providing as-needed rather than continuous cooling.

In addition, C.R. England increased operational efficiency by standardizing its maintenance program, which leaders anticipate will reduce maintenance costs by $250,000 annually.

Because of its commitment to environmental responsibility and operational efficiency, C.R. England will receive the Thermo King “Energy Efficiency Leader Award.”

Intermodal Transportation Solution Increases Sustainability

C.R. England has introduced TempStack to its Intermodal division. TempStack is an innovative, 53-foot temperature-controlled COFC technology that offers significant cost savings, expanded network coverage capacity and a reduced carbon footprint. C.R. England’s COFC technology makes the company’s fleet the largest in the industry with the ability to double-stack refrigerated containers on railroad flatcars, creating greater movement of freight through more green and cost effective transportation. The fleet will include 300 containers by the end of the first quarter of 2011.

Every load that travels by rails means having one less truck on the highway, reducing fuel costs, carbon emissions and traffic congestion, and ultimately creating safer roads. On average, each load converted to intermodal results in a 60 percent carbon footprint reduction.

Refrigeration Controls Generate Savings

C.R. England has also incorporated controls that allow them to run refrigeration units on an as-needed basis while tightly controlling temperature – changes which save money and increase operational efficiency.

A customized temperature control system, OptiSet™, offers more than 500 pre-set temperature options, allowing unit operation and product quality decisions to be made in advance. Fleet managers and drivers can collaborate to identify a tightly controlled temperature range based on the product load, which can result in more consistent product quality and more efficient use of the unit.

C.R. England has also increased operational efficiency by incorporating CYCLE-SENTRY modulation™, which allows the unit engine to shut down when air temperature has reached the desired setpoint. This saves fuel and the accumulation of engine hours.

To reduce variable maintenance costs, leaders at C.R. England have incorporated a standardized maintenance program. C.R. England anticipates the enhanced maintenance approach will reduce load loss, extend equipment life and increase driver safety.

Taylorsville Business of the Year: Nelson Labs. Nelson Labs just built a new building despite the economy and is a fixture in the City of Taylorsville. They'll be adding a number of jobs over the next few months as their business expands. They were one of the business that helped the City of Taylorsville have the highest year in building permit valuations in the history of the city.

Kearns Business of the Year: All Points Home Inspections. Al Rickard and his crew have been growing every year since he started 10 years ago. All Points can perform a variety of inspections in your home to keep your family safe.

ChamberWest Business of the Year: Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center. The KOPFC has been a fixture in Kearns since the early 60s. It now includes 9 pools, park and trail system. Construction continues to build a world class facility as a cover is being prepared to be installed over the outdoor 50m pool for year round swimming fun.

Volunteer of the Year: Asenath Horton is the Volunteer of the Year and has taken our Women in Business committee to new levels. She owns Salt Lake Builders, a Taylorsville business, with her husband, Brock.

Legacy Award: Pioneer Valley Hospital. Since 1980, this hospital has been providing services to our greater community as well as giving back to the community in many ways. Pioneer Valley has one of the busiest ER's in the state and just a couple of years ago built an entire new ER to provide better service to their patients. The hospital has created a legacy in our community over the past 30 years.

Blue Ocean Strategy - Where is your market space?

I had the opportunity to attend a conference in Minneapolis this past week. The keynote speaker was Roch Parayre, Ph.D. who spoke on the Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS). The Blue Ocean Strategy is in comparison to the competitive "Red Ocean" where competition is cut throat and only the strongest survive. Blue Ocean is finding your competitive edge and co-existing in the expansive marketplace. An example Dr. Parayre taught was in Ringling Bros Circus and Cirque du Soleil. Cirque has been increasing in value and profitability AND Ringling Bros. is not losing marketshare, it is increasing. In others words, Cirque is a circus but different and they are also marketing to a different segment than Ringling Bros. Both are growing and Cirque is not "taking" from Ringling. They each have their space in the blue ocean...get it?

The City of Taylorsville in conjunction with the United Veterans Council of Salt Lake City and County announce the 2010 Veterans Day Parade:

WHEN: Thursday, November 11, 2010 @ 11:00 a.m.

WHERE: Parade line-up begins at 9:00 a.m. behind the Taylorsville Pool, 4914 South 2700 West. Route goes from 4900 South on 2700 West, ending by Taylorsville City Hall, 2600 West Taylorsville Blv (5320 South).

ChamberWest is pleased to announce a new radio show on KTKK radio that began Monday. The program is a partnership with 7 chambers of commerce and The Valley Journals. Each chamber has their own program every Monday on KTKK AM630.

ChamberWest is currently scheduled to be "on-air" on Monday, September 27; Monday, November 8; and Monday January 3, 2011. The chamber will bring in a member with a unique story about business, have a prize drawing partway through the show and announce information about West Valley City, Taylorsville and Kearns businesses.

Please tune in to KTKK AM630 beginning Monday and hear what our local chambers are doing to build Utah's economy. If you are a ChamberWest member and have items we can give away to listeners, please contact the chamber office by Thursday prior to the airdate. The chamber must have your promotional items by Noon on Friday to be included in the program.

If you have a unique small business success story, please send the story to the chamber for consideration. As the chamber only receives 6-7 shows per year, the chamber cannot guarantee use of your story on-air. What we can do is promote our member businesses during the prize giveaway.

Mr. Harter's Bio
Gary is a retired Army Colonel who spent 25 years on active duty, leaving service in October 2005. He served in command and staff positions throughout the United States and in Germany. Gary’s final assignment was as Commander, U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground, where, for three years, he oversaw the testing of chemical and biological defense equipment, led 1,500 military, Department of Defense civilians and contractors, and was responsible for an operating budget in excess of $220 million annually. Gary previously served at U.S. Joint Forces Command, Norfolk Naval Base, Norfolk, Virginia, where he was the Chief, Current Operations for Military Support to Civil Authorities, responsible for overseeing coordination and planning of military forces to respond for severe weather, wildfires, unexploded ordnance, the 2001 Presidential Inauguration, the 2002 Winter Olympics and National Special Security Events. As a Lieutenant Colonel, Gary commanded the 84^th Chemical Battalion, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

Gary is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelors of Science in Biology and the National Defense University with a Masters of Science in National Resource Strategy.

Gary grew up in Pennsylvania, currently resides in Midway, Utah with his family, and is an avid Dallas Cowboy football fan.

ChamberWest member Kearns Oquirrh Park Fitness Center is hosting their annual Fire, Water and Ice Festival on August 7th beginning at Noon. This event begins with a parade at 9:00 beginning at Kearns High School and then east on 5400 South to Big Lots! at 4000 West.

The firework show should begin about 9:30 p.m. You can see fireworks from Oquirrh Park south of the Oval, a variety of local church's, or simply attend FWI and see it near the pools and all the food vendors and activities.

Bands include: The Salamanders, Endless Summer and 2-1/2 White Guys and a silent auction to benefit Make-A-Wish. Typically, the auction funds a complete Make-A-Wish for a community child.

Gines Service is celebrating 50 years in business by thanking customers with free hot dogs and hamburgers at noon Friday, Aug. 6, and at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, for the Kearns Hometown Days Parade.

Gines started in 1960 under Clyde Gines at Clyde's Chevron in Kearns. He was joined by his son Mark in 1976.

"Three weeks into the 2010 Clear the Air Challenge and with over 8,500 participants we have saved 1,172,773 pounds of emissions! We're thrilled to have so many new people on board this year, but we need everyone to log their miles so we can all see our collective impact (and earn bragging rights).
We've already challenged you to get creative with trip elimination strategies and to motivate others with a little healthy competition. So how are you celebrating your new rock-star status? Consider sharing your successes, experiences, tips and tricks on Facebook or by e-mail. And who knows, there might be a surprise grand prize in it for the most creative Clear the Air Challenge success story. . . (but you didn't hear that from us).

AP: Manufacturing areas lead surprise job comeback

The Associated Press is reporting that job comebacks are occurring in manufacturing areas such as North Carolina. These are just more indicators that the economy is beginning its recovery although many economists are predicting a slower recovery.

These are all good signs.
